Easy Method to Update Linux system in 2021

Updating Linux has become way easy task in recent time. Be it GUI or by command line from terminal both methods to update Linux systems are easy. If you are new to Linux you will find updating system a bit different. Several different Linux flavours are available but here we are going to discuss two major system – Ubantu (.deb based – other similar systems Debian) and Fedora (.rpm based  – other similar system Redhat, Suse and Mandeva.

Here we will cover two major player in Linux

  1. Fedora
  2. Ubantu

  1. Click on Activities on Left corner of your Desktop GUI. Click on Software on taskbar on bottom. Alternatively click on Activities type Software in search bar.  
  2. Once Software Window opens click on Update.
  3. Application will search server for updates and will present you will available updates for your system. Click on Downloads button above list of available updates.
  4. If required system will ask for restart. Restart and complete your update.

Update Fedora System using Command Line – Command DNF upgrade

  1. In terminal window run command
    sudo dnf upgrade

  2. Application will search and download update list from server. You will be presented with list of available updates.
  3.  It will give you size of updates, and you will be asked “Is it ok [y/N]“. Press y for yes if you want to update and N for No if you don’t want to update.

Update Ubantu System

Although Ubantu update manager is an automatic tool but you can run it manually also.

  1. Click on Show applications button of task bar on Ubantu system desktop. Alternatively click on Activities type Software Update in search bar.  
  2. Application will search server for updates and will present you will available updates for your system. Click on Install now button below list of available updates.
  3. Before beginning update application will ask for sudo password.
  4. Rest process is automated.
  5. If required system will ask for restart. Restart and complete your update.

Update Ubantu System using Command Line – Command apt-get upgrade

  1. In terminal window type command
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    Enter your user’s password when asked for.
  2. Application will search and download update list from server. You will be presented with list of available updates.
  3. You will be asked Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
  4. Press y for yes if you want to update and N for No if you don’t want to update.
