Also if input is date then UPPER function will convert it to date serial number.

Syntax

UPPER(text or cell reference for text)

**Example**

Here directly text string is provided as input to text function. In below example *“tom”* has been provided as input to UPPER function.

**Example**

UPPER("tom")

This will give output as TOM in upper case. Here UPPER function is used to change text to upper case in Excel

### Convert to upper case using UPPER Function with cell reference as input

Here text string is input as cell reference, suppose input text is in cell A1 below syntax will be used

**Example **

### Convert to upper case using UPPER Function when input is text with numbers

Mixed input i.e. text with number can also be provided as input to UPPER function in excel. UPPER function will ignore punctuations, numbers and spaces.

**Example**

Input is 26-Sep-2021 then you will get output as 26-SEP-2021

**Syntax**

UPPER("26-Sep-2021")

But in case you are using cell reference for date with UPPER function directly on Date it will give you Date serial as output.

So if your cell A1 has 26-Sep-2021 and you use function UPPER(A1) in above case output will be “4465”.

Here you will have to use TEXT function along with UPPER Function.

**Syntax**

UPPER(TEXT(A1,"dd-mmm-yyyy"))

### Change number formatting to Text formatting using UPPER function in Excel
