MS Excel get day from date – 2 easy methods

To get Day from date in MS excel , i.e. Sunday, Monday…., we can use any of the below methods.

Excel get day name from date

Method 1 – Get day name from date using formula

Get day from date in excel. In this method we use text function; here we lose details of Date only text will remain for day.

=text(A1,”ddd”)

This function will display day in abbreviated short form (Sun, Mon…..)
=text(A1,”dddd”)

This function will display day name in complete (Sunday, Monday…..)

Method 2 – Get day name from date using number format

Right Click on cell with Date and select Format. Now under number tab select Custom category and in type box enter ddd to get abbreviated day or dddd to get complete day.

Advantage of using this method date information is not lost. Day can be reverted to date by simply changing format.
